Author Biography

  • Jacques Louis Matthee, North-West University

    Jacques Matthee is a senior lecturer within the School of Basic Sciences at the NWU (Vaal Triangle Campus), ZA and an advocate of the High Court of South Africa. He is also Executive Editor of the NWU Students Law Review and Associate of the Centre for Constitutional Rights. In 2004 and 2007 he obtained the degrees LLB and LLM respectively from the NWU (Potchefstroom Campus). He obtained his LLD titled 'One Person’s Culture is Another Person’s Crime: A Cultural Defence in South African law?' in 2014. Since 2009 Matthee has published articles dealing with criminal law issues on an interdisciplinary basis. Matthee has also made contributions to books on the Law of Succession, Law of Civil Procedure, Criminal law, Law of Criminal Procedure, Law of Evidence, Legal Pluralism and African Customary law. In 2013 he participated in a discussion of the controversial Traditional Courts Bill on the television program 'Rights and Recourse'. He has made numerous conference contributions, both in South Africa and abroad, dealing with the “cultural defence in criminal law”. He is currently involved in projects pertaining to cultural diversity, cultural heritage and legal pluralism. Matthee has received numerous awards and scholarships throughout his studies and career. Some of these include being a scholarship holder of both the “DAAD-NRF Joint In-Country Scholarship Programme for Postgraduate Studies” in South Africa and the “Stichting Studiefonds voor Zuid-Afrikaanse Studenten” for research in the Netherlands, and most recently, receiving a Graduate Scholar Award at the 12th International Conference on Diversity in Organizations, Communities and Nations, held at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Matthee's main research and lecturing experience lie with Criminal law, Law of Criminal Procedure, Legal Pluralism, African Customary law, Cultural Diversity and Cultural Heritage. In 2015 Matthee was admitted as a member of the National Bar Council of South Africa.
